SANTA BARBARA, CALIF. - Seventh-seeded Stein Metzger and Kevin Wong
upset top-seeded and local favorites Dax Holdren and Todd Rogers here
Sunday (August 19) to net their first domestic title in the finals of
the men's Michelob Light Open at Santa Barbara.
While Metzger and Wong were winning four-straight matches Sunday, Dianne
DeNecochea was capturing her first pro beach volleyball title with
15-season veteran Liz Masakayan by defeating eighth-seeded Jennifer
Meredith and Wendy Stammer to win the women's Santa Barbara title.
The men's final ended Sunday's action on East Beach with Holdren and
Rogers losing 21-14 and 21-19 in 41 minutes to Metzger and Wong in the
$125,000 Association of Volleyball Professionals (AVP) Pro Beach
Volleyball Tour event. Both championship teams Sunday each collected
$14,500 checks for their efforts. Metzger and Wong posted an 8-1 match
mark and had to win five-straight elimination matches to reach the final
two rounds.
Holdren and Rogers rebounded from an opening morning loss to
fourth-seeded Albert Hannemann and Sean Scott (23-21, 18-21 and 15-10 in
67 minutes) to win two matches to advance to their third-straight
domestic final this season. Holdren and Rogers posted domestic wins in
Clearwater Beach, Fla., and Hermosa Beach, Calif., earlier this season.
Playing on their home beach, Holdren and Rogers had to win an
elimination match before advancing to the finals with a 22-24, 21-15 and
15-9 semi-final victory over second-seeded Canyon Ceman and Mike
Whitmarsh in 47 minutes. Holdren and Rogers missed the last four
domestic events due to participation in eight FIVB Beach Volleyball
World Tour events in Europe.
Metzger and Wong had to win two elimination matches Sunday morning to
advance to the semi-finals where they upset Hannemann and Scott 21-11
and 21-15 in 37 minutes. Metzger and Wong also missed 2001 AVP Pro
Beach Volleyball Tour events due to the European events where they won
the FIVB title in June at Gstaad, Switzerland.
Ceman and Whitmarsh defeated Hannemann and Scott 21-13 and 22-20 in the
41-minute third-place match to share $9,750. With the win, Ceman and
Whitmarsh assumed control of the men's Michelob Light California Swing
competition where a $10,000 prize will be awarded after next week's
Michelob Light Open in Manhattan Beach, Caiif.
After winning two elimination matches in the morning and a 19-21, 24-22
and 20-18 semi-final win over second-seeded Barbra Fontana and Elaine
Youngs in 88 minutes, the seventh-seeded DeNecochea and Masakayan scored
a 21-19 and 22-20 win in 49 minutes over Meredith and Stammer in the
women's final.
DeNecochea and Masakayan shared the $14,500 first-place prize. While
DeNecochea was winning her first pro beach title, Masakayan was winning
her 45th. The Santa Barbara title was her first domestic win since 1999
as Masakayan won three times in 2000 in Brazil, Portugal and China.
Meredith and Stammer, who were playing in their first pro beach final,
split $9,750 for second-place. Meredith and Stammer advanced to the
finals with a 21-13, 20-22 and 15-9 upset win over top-seeded Lisa Arce
and Holly McPeak in 52 minutes.
Fontana and Youngs came back to win the third-place match and the $6,800
prize by defeating Arce and McPeak 15-21, 21-17 and 15-13 in 61 minutes.
With the win, Fontana and Youngs moved ahead of Arce and McPeak in the
Michelob Light California Swing series by four points (506 to 502). The
Michelob Light California Swing winner will share a $7,500 post-season
award..
Following the Michelob Light Open at Manhattan Beach, the AVP Pro Beach
Volleyball Tour takes a weekend off prior to ending the season in Las
Vegas, Nev., for The Paul Mitchell King and Queen of the Beach
competition. Metzger and Wong will be playing internationally along
with Arce/McPeak, Fontana/Youngs and Dain Blanton/Eric Fonoimoana in the
Goodwill Games in Brisbane, Australia (August 29-September 4).
Blanton and Fonoimoana, the Sydney 2000 Olympic Gold Medallists, entered
the The Michelob Light Open at Santa Barbara with different partners.
Fonoimoana and Rob Heidger placed seventh after being eliminated Sunday
morning by Metzger and Wong. Blanton had to forfeit his two matches
Saturday with Carl Henkel due to a strained stomach injury.
