Fong San, Chinese Taipei ? The USA Women?s National Volleyball Team avenged
an opening match three-set loss to the Korean National Team with a five-set
(28-26, 23-25, 25-19, 19-25, 15-8) victory at the 2001 FIVB World Grand
Prix. The win puts the U.S. record at 4-2 in the tournament, good for a
second-place tie, with one weekend remaining in pool play.

?We had trouble putting the ball down on Korea's side of the court,? said
USA head coach Toshiaki Yoshida. ?All of the outside hitters came in and
performed well when needed. It was an important match for us and I thought
that Danielle Scott did a great job of leading the team to victory in the
fifth set. Tara (Cross-Battle) also did a good job at the libero position.?

Cross-Battle (Houston, Texas, Long Beach State) was forced to play the
libero position when Stacy Sykora (Burleson, Texas/Texas A&M) was injured
the night before in the victory against Russia. Sykora was attempting to
dig an attack by Elena Tiourina in the fourth set when she was struck in the
eye by the ball. Sykora is questionable for next weekend?s matches.

USA middle blocker Danielle Scott (Baton Rouge, La./Long Beach State) won
the best attacker award for the second leg of the tournament. Scott led the
match with 21 points, including 18 kills and three blocks. USA outside
hitter Logan Tom was named ?crowd favorite? of the second leg.

Heather Bown (Yorba Linda, Calif./Univ. of Hawaii) also turned in a strong
performance at middle for Team USA. Bown tallied 13 kills and a match high
six blocks, more than Korea?s five team blocks.

?Our team did a great job of adjusting to a new lineup and we came together
to play well at crucial times,? said Bown. ?Our serving and blocking were
key to the win, as well as a great performance by our outside hitters.?

USA concludes the preliminary phase next weekend in Harbin, China, with
matches against China (5-1), Cuba (3-3) and Germany (1-5). The eight-team
finals begin on August 22 in Macau, China.
