Fong San, Chinese Taipei -- The USA Women?s National Volleyball Team
proved their three-set sweep of second-ranked Russia last week at the
2001 FIVB Grand Prix was no fluke, pushing top-ranked Cuba to five sets
last night. Team USA lost a tough five-set match, 17-25, 25-22, 25-21,
23-25, 11-15.
USA middle-blocker Danielle Scott led all scorers with 19 points,
including 15 kills and two points.
?Today?s loss was tough. We couldn't seem to get it together early on in
each game. Cuba played well with their usual strong attacks and blocking
and their jump serve gave us difficulty with passing,? said Scott. ?I
think the subs came in and did a good job, particularly Wiz Bachman with
her blocking, Nicole (Branagh) with her serving and attacking. I think
that this loss will help us promote and be more focused against Russia
tomorrow.?
The USA team is back in action tonight with a rematch with Russia. They
finish the second leg of the Grand Prix against Korea on Sunday, a team
which swept the U.S. in the opening match of the tournament.
